Letter of the President of British Hellenic Chamber of Commerce, Harris Ikonomopoulos, re article of The Independent

Dear Sirs,

It is not in the spirit of these Olympian days to complain about a story and/or answer to any journalist who decides to proceed with the publication of a predefined title and create a story despite lacking one that backs it. I am not a Greek Olympic Official, and no Greek Olympic Official or organisation has spent a single cent to finance the effort. The British Hellenic Chamber of Commerce, Alliance for Greece and the International Olympic Truce Centre, based on private sponsorship and with private sacrifices from the part of  the organisers are proud to provide  - free of charge - any hospitality may be extended to any agency of the Hellenic Republic, the Hellenic Olympic Committee, the International Olympic Academy, former Olympic gold medallists and symbols of Olympism at the House of Hellenes for just a few days of the London Games.

The journalist who "created" yesterday's story may ignore what one means by saying that "the Cynics were not cynical" but will certainly know that were it not for Greece there would be no Olympic Games.

It is not my business to compare National Olympic Homes costs with the cost that The House of Hellenes is expected to have. Neither to remind anyone that London 2012 Games cost 10bn GBP, out of which only 1bn came out of private sponsorship, the rest being covered by British taxpayers, unlike the House of Hellenes.

In May 2011 Lord Bates walked 3.000 miles for Peace, from Olympia to London. He was present when I read the article, reminding me that upon arrival to England he received two phone calls from local media. The first was to inquire whether he was planning to walk the final steps with any celebrities. The second to be asked how much expense he claimed from the UK government for his walk.

I expect The Independent to report the truth. In this case it didn't. I, thus, ask The Independent for an apology and to immediately restore the unsubstantiated, the least to say, title and article, including publishing the present letter.  In any other case I will thank the editor for providing me the opportunity to make up,inter alia, for the personal funds I and others have put to support our country.

Yours sincerely,

Harris Ikonomopoulos,
President
British Hellenic Chamber of Commerce

Letter of the President of British Hellenic Chamber of Commerce, Harris Ikonomopoulos re article of The Standard

Dear Sirs,

It is not in the spirit of these Olympian days to complain about a story which lacks as much truth and expertise as does your one on Tuesday July 31 headed 'What economic crisis? Partying Greeks take over the Carlton Club'. I am not a Greek Olympic Official, and no Greek Olympic Official organisation has spent a single cent to finance the House. The British Hellenic Chamber of Commerce, Alliance for Greece and the International Olympic Truce Centre, based on private sponsorship and with private sacrifices by the organisers are proud to provide - free of charge -  any hospitality that may be extended to agencies of the Hellenic Republic, the Hellenic Olympic Committee, the International Olympic Academy, former Olympic gold medalists and symbols of Olympism at the House of Hellenes for just a few days of the London Games.

The first was to inquire whether he was planning to walk the final steps with any celebrities. The second to be asked how much he had claimed in expenses from the UK government for his walk.

Of all British newspapers I expect The Standard to report the truth. In this case it didn't. So all I ask for is an apology and, perhaps, a small contribution from the editor for providing me the opportunity to make up for the personal funds I and my colleagues have put in to support my country.

Yours sincerely,

Harris Ikonomopoulos,

STATEMENT ISSUED BY THE INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC TRUCE FOUNDATION

In a few hours, athletes from every corner of the world, gathered in London, will honor the highest celebration of athleticism and the greatest peaceful gathering of humanity.

The Olympic Games are a global event, uniting peoples through sport and culture.
Since their founding in ancient Olympia and their modern revival in Athens, the Games have been linked to the goal of peaceful coexistence, fair play, and a worldwide truce held over the duration of the Games.

Yet, at a moment when such Olympic ideals prevail around the world, the conflict in Syria continues to escalate.

In the face of the immense humanitarian crisis affecting the Syrian people, our message is one of respect for this global tradition: Olympic Truce.

We call on all sides in Syria to honor the Olympic Truce.

Suspension of hostilities, if only for the duration of the Olympic Games, should provide the space for negotiations to resolve the crisis peacefully.

A ceasefire would give hope and prospects to the beleaguered Syrian people for a brighter and peaceful future.

We call on all sides – even at this late hour – to honor UN General Assembly Resolution 66/5 of 17 October, 2011, which, for the first time in history, was signed by all 193 member states. We call on all sides to honor the spirit of the Olympic Games and, in so doing, to give peace a chance.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Board of the International Olympic Truce Foundation is chaired by Dr. Jacques Rogge, President of the International Olympic Committee. The two Vice-Chairpersons of the International Olympic Truce Foundation are Mr. George Papandreou and Mrs. Fanny Palli Petralia. The statement was issued through the International Olympic Truce Centre in Athens, Greece.

Program “From Athens to London: Shape Your Future”

In view of 2012 Olympic Games join us in an initiative that originates in Greece and is addressing young people around the world!

Luckily there is still hope for young people to have a say in shaping their future! This is the main message deriving from youngsters in various cities in Greece and other European countries visited by the team of the program “From Athens to London: Shape Your Future”. The program is an initiative originating in Greece and organized by MATHITIADA, an educational youth institution focusing on culture and sports.

A series of events has been scheduled in Greece and other European countries in order to approach the youth and further discuss the scope of the program: to unite young people around the world, helping them raise their voices, make their opinions heard, and most importantly, considered!

The program is currently in London, where representatives had the opportunity to offer Lady Victoria Borwick, Deputy Mayor of London, an olive tree, as the symbol of the Olympic Games and the city of Athens, as well as the Olympic spirit and ideals represented by MATHITIADA. With a warm wish for successful Olympic Games, the olive tree was handed over by Pyrros Dimas, Olympic Champion and Ambassador of the program, at a specially organized event that was hosted in the context of the Host City Reception organized by the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson (July 27, 2012).

In addition, the presentation of the program “From Athens to London: Shape your Future” in London will be held at the “House of Hellenes” (July 29, 2012), with the presence of Pyrros Dimas.

The program “From Athens to London: Shape Your Future” (a sequel of the respective program “From Athens to Beijing” in 2008) has been granted the official support of the European Parliament Information Office and the European Committee Delegation in Greece, the International Olympic Truce Center, the Association of European Journalists, the Municipality of Athens, AIESEC, Aegean Airlines and DEPA (Greek Public Gas Corporation).
